Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP) is allegedly the recording of a ghost or spirit on an electronic recording device. EVP can be captured using any electronic recording equipment, but I recommend a decent digital dictaphone for the best results, preferably with a facility to transfer recordings to a PC for analysis. Your equipment doesn’t have to cost the Earth, BirminghamIU’s successfully captured EVP on an Olympus VN-2100PC Digital Voice Recorder using the standard built in microphone, which at the time of writing costs £29.39 in Argos (UK), but is available everywhere.

To capture EVP the investigation location must be as quiet as possible to start with, if it’s too noisy it’s impossible to get any definite evidence. First listen very carefully to the silence in the location and note down any sounds that you do hear to eliminate. You’d be surprised what sounds your brain automatically ignores by default, E.g. birds, humming from electrical equipment like a PC fan, wind and much more.

A popular way to conduct an EVP experiment is to ask various questions on the dictaphone to any spirit that might be present, leaving plenty of gaps for an answers. Another method is to simply leave the equipment recording in an empty location, but unfortunately it’s harder to eliminate external sounds if you’re not present during the recording.

When analysing the recordings, remember that EVP might sound very distant or faint. I recommend you transfer the recordings to a PC and listen through headphones. A useful piece of software for analysing recordings is Audacity which is available as a totally free download.

During investigations at BirminghamIU we are sometimes lucky too catch Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP). EVP can be very rare and hard to catch in some locations, if in fact it can be captured at all. Anyone can capture EVP, but it’s very important to be patient. You are extremely lucky if you capture EVP on your first attempt or even on your 10th attempt. Don’t give up and keep trying as it normally pays off in the end.
